Diplomacy
This classic purely conversational game of the year has taken many forms over the years.
The first version of The Avalon Hill Game Co. may have had the widest release, but Avalon Hill re-released the game in 1999, complete with a colorful new map and metal pieces. In 2008, Avalon Hill released a 50th anniversary edition with a new map and cardboard pieces depicting the Army and Navy.
In the game, players represent one of the seven "European Powers" (Great Britain, France, Austria-Hungary, Germany, Italy, Russia or Turkey) in the years before the First World War. The game begins in the spring of 1901. , and players make both spring and fall moves each year. There are only two types of military units: armies and navies. On any given turn, each of your military units has limited options: they can move into an adjacent territory, support an allied unit in an attack on an adjacent territory, support an allied unit in defending an adjacent territory, or take their own position. Players give instructions to each of their units by writing "orders". The outcome of each move is determined by the rules of the game. No dice or other elements of randomness. With its incredibly simplistic movement mechanics paired with a significant conversational element, many players hold this system in high esteem.
