About the association
Latvian Ornithological Society (LOB) is a public organization founded in 1985, in which anyone interested can join. The association's mission is to preserve a diverse and viable Latvian wild bird fauna. The goal of LOB is to promote the preservation of conditions that would allow the long-term existence of all bird populations naturally associated with the territory of Latvia.
The Ornithological Society of Latvia has been advocating for the diversity of nature for the well-being of people and birds for more than 30 years. The association takes care of wild bird research, protection and habitat preservation thanks to more than 600 members, to whom anyone interested is invited to join.
Since 1994, the association has represented the international union of bird protection organizations "BirdLife International" in Latvia and since 2001 has been a full partner of "BirdLife".
LOB conducts research and protection of wild birds, as well as educational measures for members and the wider public, publishes the magazine "Birds in nature", cooperates with state and public nature protection organizations (more information: www.lob.lv ).
Why donate?
Birds delight people with their beautiful songs and gorgeous costumes. People can enjoy the unique natural performances provided by birds. Birds are the most visible and attractive part of living nature. They are also the first to "tell" us about the events in nature - about the change of seasons, how responsibly we manage, what awaits us if we continue to act irresponsibly. The decline in the number of birds in the countryside indicates excessive use of chemicals, while the decline in the number of forest birds tells us about problems in forest management. Birds are messengers with information about what awaits us - humans. In Latvia, birds are most threatened by the loss of their habitats - the suitable places for bird nesting in forests, fields, and waters will decrease.
That's why we (Latvijas Ornithologija biedrība) study birds and carry out bird censuses (to know which birds and in which places are having the hardest time), actively represent the interests of nature conservation in negotiations with decision makers and carry out work on the protection of specific bird habitats, as well as organize events and issue materials for public education.
Where will the donations go?
Donations will turn into good deeds to improve the welfare of Latvian wild birds and, therefore, also people. A more specific goal is public education, within the framework of which the LOB education program also operates, with the main target audience among children, young people and families.
