7 Wonders
With today's game offer, it is difficult to find games that have been played so much that when you start a game, small shivers go down your spine. But that's a good sign, because these days only basic designs can be played over and over until they're learned to the core. In the game description, the world classic - 7 Wonders.
Subject matter
The game is about the seven wonders of the ancient world and their construction. Each player represents one civilization, collects resources, builds various industrial, military, scientific and cultural buildings, which gradually improve his civilization and lead to the desired victory points in the long run. I'm not really sure how much of the action is themed, as people mostly look at the card bonuses and colors, but the cards are very well illustrated, so a themed feeling is in the air all the time.
Components
Basically, 7 Wonders is three decks of cards and a stack of chips. Each player also has their own playing field, which gives different bonuses depending on the wonder of the ancient world you're trying to build. The cards are well illustrated. The clear iconography is especially noteworthy, as you can easily understand what each card does by looking at the icons on the cards. Consequently, there is no significant text on the cards that would be a barrier to non-English speaking players.
Mechanics
This is one of the first games that introduced the world to the now widely used card drafting. Each player starts the round with 7 cards, of which they keep one and pass the rest. Then you have to choose from 6 cards, etc. This is an important choice, as it is very likely that the other cards will no longer be usable. The chosen card is immediately played, and depending on the card type, it can provide various benefits such as resources for more advanced cards in the future, military power, trade, science or victory points.
This is how each civilization is gradually built, and your choices in the first round with the first six cards will affect what you can do in the third, final round of the game.
In parallel, players can invest cards to build their own wonder of the ancient world, which gives bonuses or helps to get a significant number of victory points. It is important not only to develop your civilization, but also to see what your neighbors are doing. If they develop militarism, you should start investing in it a bit too. If the neighbors have created resource mines, then there is a possibility that there will be an opportunity to purchase some of these resources from them in the future. The game mechanics all happen in parallel, thus making 7 Wonders an extremely dynamic game that can be played quickly (in 30-40 minutes) even by a company of 7 players.
Multiplayer
High. Each of the 7 wonders of the ancient world gives different bonuses and advantages during the game. In addition, they are double-sided, with the B side for advanced players. However, I recommend using the B-sides immediately after the first game. Also, each time you will be dealt different cards, neighbors with different playing styles. Even playing three to four games of 7 Wonders in one night will keep the feeling fresh. And trust me, you will definitely play 7 Wonders more than once. It should be added here that this game is not intended for 2 players. The information written on the box is a bit misleading, but in a company of three to four players, the game is perfectly playable. Also available are various expansions that further refresh the game and make it deeper for experienced players.
Rating
I'm personally tired of 7 Wonders and don't really enjoy the game anymore, but I recently taught it to new players and saw how excited they were about all the possibilities and the game design. That's why I recommend 7 Wonders to those players who are not yet up to their ears in the world of board games, but want to get to know something quite simple, but at the same time different and unique, and also playable for the whole family. Rating: 7 out of 10.
